Alice Caporn's Modern Living Magazine
‘Modern Living’ is an edition of Dr Alice Caporn’s monthly magazine published in 1939 in Perth, Western Australia.
This historic booklet features Dr Caporn’s controversial Town Hall lecture, where she rallied her followers against the stinging media criticism she had received in the Perth press for questioning the health benefits of dairy foods, and for attempting to sell what she described as the first ‘real’ wholemeal bread in Perth, Western Australia.
This lively and historical publication also features recipes and is peppered throughout with Dr Caporn’s views on health and a plant-based diet. She trained as a Doctor in Naturopathy in America in the 1930s and received a PhD from Columbia University. Dr Caporn was known as ‘America’s famous health nutritionist’ and for her unique Pilates-style exercises known throughout America in the 1930s as the Dr Caporn exercises.
